Toowoon Bay Surf Life Saving Club
Duke of Edinburgh 2011 - 2012 Season

If you are between 14 and 25 years old why not join us in the Duke of Edinburgh program at Toowoon Bay SLSC ?

Did you know that our club has 9 members who have finished their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh ? They are Lachie Wotton, Courtney Neville, Emily-Kate Watts, Jacob Porter, Damien Brien, Adam Withers, Maggie McCarthy,Ruby Rooke and Lauren Owen who are all cadets at Toowoon Bay SLSC.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Minimum age is 14. The cost is $80 and the award will take a minimum of 6 months to complete.
Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Candidates have to successfully complete the Bronze Award.  Minimum age is 15. The cost is $45 and the award will take a minimum of 6 months to complete.
Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Candidates have to successfully complete the Silver Award. Minimum age is 16. The award will take a minimum of 12 months to complete. An added bonus for completing your Gold DOE's Award before doing the HSC is that many universities will give you an extra 4 ATAR points. Employers are always impressed if a young person has gained the DOE's award. For older candidates you can go direct to the Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award (This will take a minimum 18months to complete).

SO what is involved for the ‘dukes ‘ team to get their award ?
Fitness ( any form of fitness e.g swimming, running, netball, rowing, or simply participating in cadets each week)
Skill ( learning something new, why not ask Maggie about making jewellery or Adam about learning Japanese, or Damo, Jacob and Lauren about the IRB crewman’s certificate)
Community Service ( e.g going on patrol, fundraising for the club, helping out in a nursing home, Meals on Wheels, ‘Vinnies Van’ etc)
Adventurous Journey ( eg hiking, camping, kayaking, abseiling)

Once you have registered, all the log booking is done online through the Duke of Edinburgh's Award website. Your progress will be monitored by the DOE's Award Coordinators. They will try to answer your questions and hopefully say nice things about you when you finish each section.
The Adventurous Journey will be organised in school holidays. Possibly next January 2012 and Easter 2012. Your input, about what you would like to achieve, participate in, venue, skills and learning etc, is most welcome.

The Award is…
  Available to everyone
Any young person aged 14 – 25 can do The Award, no matter what your gender, cultural background, religious or political affiliation, or ability.
  About experiencing, connecting, developing
You will get out of The Award what you put in. There is the opportunity for you to both grow personally and connect with others, through a range of new experiences. You have the chance to discover your potential.
  Not a competition
The Award is not a competition against anyone else, but rather a personal challenge. It offers the opportunity to work with others whilst focusing on your own unique abilities.
  Flexible
The Award offers a framework for you to focus your interests, improve your abilities and do something you’ve always wanted to do. You can enter The Award at the level that best suits you, and choose activities that fit in with your life.
  Balanced
The different sections of The Award give you the chance to experience a wide range of challenges. You have the opportunity to extend your existing abilities and also try something entirely new.
  Progressive
You can improve your abilities and increase your personalisation of The Award with each level you do (Bronze, Silver, Gold).
  About personal achievement
You set your own goals, and work towards them. Your achievements are your own, and are not bench-marked against anyone else.
  A marathon, not a sprint
The Award is about showing regular commitment and perseverance. Your efforts are recognised over time, and your achievements are your own improvements.
  Voluntary
The choice to do The Award is entirely your own. Your commitment to each section and level is about setting your own goals and going about achieving them. Your adult volunteers are there to guide and help you recognise your abilities and keep you motivated when you need it.
  Fun
The Award is fun. The activities you choose reflect your interests and passions, so enjoy the challenge!
