FINGAL BAY MASTERS CARNIVAL

14 JANUARY 2012

A great day was had by all at the Fingal Bay Masters Carnival held on the 14th January, 2012, despite the strong easterly wind that battered the beach in the morning water events.

Toowoon Bay did extremely well coming 5th out of 18 competing clubs, with only 12 competitors. Some of the clubs had a big contingent of competitors compared to Toowoon Bay, but we were very strong in the beach events, with a lot of 1st and 2nd placings.

The great thing about competing for this club is the support offered to all competitors by their club mates, and the sportsmanship shown to other clubs.  We are indeed, proud Toowoonies.

Peter Pracy, Peter Wall and Steve Kirby competed in the Taplin event.  It’s the first time we have had a Taplin team for many years.  Peter Pracy did the swim, Peter Wall did the board paddle and Steve Kirby completed the race with the single ski.  Well done, it was great effort.

EAST COAST MASTERS - COLLAROY BEACH

5 FEBRUARY 2012

11 Toowoon Bay SLSC Masters descended on Collaroy Beach for the East Coast Masters, 9 competitors and 2 officials and co-managers in Di Watt and Megan McCarthy. The team had a very successful carnival overall and all competitors medalled on the day. Another feat of greatness by the (geriatric) Lightening Bolts. We may have had a small team but we made a BIG impact.

Chris McCormick set the ball rolling with gold in his individual sprint. Kaye Chaffer and Kerri Grumelli took silver in their individual sprints – and only a meter or two away from that elusive gold.  Our girls 200 relay (Jenny Roberts, Kerri Grumelli, Kay Wall, Sue Projceski )(2011 National Champions) took gold again (a colour they are getting used to) in a great display.

Our mens 200 relay took silver - and only a couple of meters behind the Australian Champions, Queenscliff.

In the flags, John McCarthy was outstanding, and in a narrow decision, took silver against Murray Getz from Queenscliff – who is also a current Australian Champion.

Steve (“the Diver”) Kirby was a certain medallist but was squeezed into 4th position – he will reverse this next carnival. Steve is improving in leaps and bounds and higher honours beckon.

We may have had a small team present at Collaroy but the effort that everyone produced certainly sets up a good foundation for the State Aussies and World Titles this season.

Congratulations to you all for a fantastic effort. Chris McCormick, John McCarthy, Craig Horton, Steve Kirby, Kaye Chaffer, Jenny Roberts, Kerri Guirmelli, Kay Wall and Renae Dally made up our squad on the day.
